Shikyou appears to be a woman with short mustard yellow hair and red eyes. She wears a gray kimono with green collar, which is secured by a red sash, and a white bow on top of her head.

Shikyou is an Amanojaku. Amanojaku are a type of 妖怪 (Yokai) that cause mischief and harm to humans. They make people act upon urges that they normally can suppress.
Despite her apparent status as an amanojaku, Shikyou has a unique power. The role of Shikyou is to return life to the gods by causing unfortunate deaths. All human lives are merely borrowed from the gods and must be returned to them in time. She is referred to as a god of death.
In the past, Shikyou has committed abominable acts such as killing an entire village by making the people cannibalize one another.
If Mai and Akari had met, it was said something dreadful would happen. It is unknown whether or not the meeting would cause actual harm and destruction.
It's likely that it would only impact Shikyou herself, since she is seen as the antagonist, and does not appear to care about the lives of humans or anyone else but herself.
Shikyou appears to hate humans. She is most likely mad at them for not fearing nor worshiping the gods and Shikyou herself.
In her song,死凶天邪鬼 (Shikyou, the Amanojaku), she makes fun of Ryou, who is an atheist, and Mai, for possibly following her mother's footsteps and not believing in gods.
Towards the end of the series, Mai gets killed and beheaded. It is possible Shikyou is responsible for this, as she keeps bringing up beheading in her song.
Another possible theory states that Emi is the reason Mai and Akari met, therefore Shikyou became extremely upset at her. As Shikyou sees humans as lesser beings, she might have found this act offensive.
