В основе песни - стихотворение Евгения Долматовского (1915-1994), написанное в 1950 г. Первые же его публикации появились в "Пионерской правде" в 1930 г. Он был добровольцем на строительстве первой очереди московского метро, участникам которого позднее посвящает роман в стихах "Добровольцы" (1956 год). В 1941-1945 годах Долматовский - военный журналист, попал в 1941 в окружение и бежал из плена снова на фронт. "Родина слышит" навеяно подвигами военных лётчиков, как до, во время, так и после войны.
Дмитрий Шостакович, который дружил с Долматовским, написавший на его стихи несколько песен, кантату "Песнь о лесах" (Сталинская премия, 1950), цикл романсов, эту песню создал в формате гимна (говорят, его вдохновил старинный русский гимн "Коль славен", во всяком случае, первые такты и стиль схожи).
Недаром мелодия песни долгие годы служила позывными Всесоюзного радио, а в 60-х годах стала своеобразным гимном космонавтики, с подачи Ю.Гагарина. В сохранившейся стенограмме его старта записано, как он напевал "Родина слышит", а сам он сказал после приземления:
… Был полон радости, когда коснулся Земли. Когда спускался, то пел песню: «Родина слышит, Родина знает»…

History of the song
