When BTS first revealed the group’s upcoming debut under the name “방탄소년단 (Bangtan Sonyeondan)” translating to “Bulletproof Boy Scouts”, haters mocked them for a tacky name like this. They were laughed at as a group that would barely last two years. They called the name pretentious and cheesy.
With the true meaning of the name being, “the bulletproof scouts will protect the teens from the bullets of prejudice and pressure”, it was an unconventional group name at the time.
