As a child, Halsey’s family would move from one cramped apartment to another, with her parents often working two jobs to support their family. In her August 2015 Billboard interview, Halsey explained:
"We moved wherever the jobs or cheap apartments were".
Following her high school graduation and a brief stint at college, Halsey moved from New Jersey to New York, specifically the Lower East Side, to a “heroin den.” It was there that Halsey began posting music to YouTube and Soundcloud, such as her debut single “Ghost.”
In July 2018, Halsey collaborated with benny blanco and Khalid to release “Eastside”, in which she sings:
"He used to meet me on the Eastside In the city where the sun don’t set And every day, you know where we’d ride Through the backstreets in a blue Corvette"
The track even samples “Eastside.” The secondary “Eastside” is taken from Halsey’s performance on the original track.
Halsey had been a fan of G-Eazy before they met and got together. Before the couple’s split, there have been a snippet of what seemed to be another track featuring Halsey on a video posted by G-Eazy on his Instagram Stories. Halsey seems to be referring to the collab with the artist that was supposed to be in G-Eazy’s ‘'B-Sides’‘ EP released on September 19, 2019.
In her January 2019 interview for Glamour, Halsey claimed that she remembers every fan she meets, a skill inherited from her father:
Watching my dad [remember old customers and details about their lives] affected me as an artist tremendously. I have met tens of thousands of fans; I don’t forget any of them. Ever.
During her promotional release week for 2017’s hopeless fountain kingdom an interaction between Halsey and a fan was captured. Upon recognizing a fan, Halsey recalled the moment they first met:
You were sitting on a park bench […] You took your headphones out and you were listening to my song, and you grabbed me. Of course I remember you, that was three years ago! I remember everybody, guys, c'mon! (Laughs)
Halsey broke down this lyric for Apple Music in January 2020:
I don’t want people who know him to hear it and think anything bad about him. Families go through cycles, and my father and I have a really great relationship now. We never didn’t, [but] there was a time where I wasn’t being receptive to any male energy in my life. Because I had been so wronged […] If I’m writing a song about something, it usually means I’m past it. I wrote that about a Milwaukee date on the summer tour two years ago, that I remembered really vividly.
This could possible reference to either an eating disorder or medication/drugs causing her hair to fall out.
In June 2017 track “Bad At Love,” Halsey sings of a blue-eyed woman whom she loved, but lost due to cocaine use:
"Got a girl with California eyes And I thought that she could really be the one this time But I never got the chance to make her mine Because she fell in love with little thin white lines"
Former boyfriend G-Eazy has also gotten into trouble for cocaine use on several occasions and was even arrested in Sweden in 2018, whilst the pair were still dating. Earlier that year, Halsey was spotted snorting an unknown substance – believed to be cocaine – on a yacht.
